Wild & Rural Landscapes: Painting the land is a meditation for me. Never am I more present, happy, appreciative and loving than when I am painting the land. Scents, the wind, heat and cold, light, thoughts and ever changing emotions – all are infused in my paintings.
subUrban Landscapes: These landscapes come from an urge to honor and document some of the more humble houses in my neighborhood. Some of them are destined for demolition, others have charmed me in some inexplicable way – to all there is a poignancy and vulnerability. Although the indigenous animals have appeared on the scene on a more subconscious level, it seems they are witness to the fact that we are not here alone, and also they remind us of who and what we are displacing as we remodel, rebuild, expand.
Technique: Although I love the quality of watercolor, the over-painting with soft pastels allows me to work the paintings more. Composition can be more fluid and I am able to capture light and shadow in a way that I couldn't with watercolor alone.
Education & Awards: I studied at UC Berkeley and received a BA in Art as well as the Dean's Award in Painting. After living in NYC, I returned to study as a Master's candidate in the Interdisciplinary Arts Department at SFSU, and to study graphic design at CCSF. I have studied privately with Ben Kudo (Los Angeles watercolorist) and Anthony Holdsworth (Oakland cityscape oil painter), and have sold work personally and through the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite.
